Routine immigration checks and physical barriers at the land frontier between Gibraltar and Spain are being removed from 15 July 2026.
The change follows the signing of the UK–EU Agreement in respect of Gibraltar on 14 July 2026.
Has the Gibraltar–Spain border been abolished?
The legal boundary remains, but travellers will no longer stop for routine immigration checks when crossing the land frontier between Gibraltar and Spain.
Gibraltar remains a British Overseas Territory outside both the European Union and the Schengen Area. The agreement creates a more open land crossing without changing Gibraltar’s constitutional status.
Border controls are being relocated rather than removed entirely.
Passengers arriving through Gibraltar Airport will pass through Gibraltar entry controls and, where entering the Schengen Area, Spanish Schengen controls. Checks may also take place at Gibraltar’s port where required.
What does this mean for visitors?
After completing the required arrival checks, travellers will be able to cross the land frontier between Gibraltar and Spain without another routine passport inspection.
Current UK government guidance states that, for British visitors, time spent in Gibraltar counts alongside time spent elsewhere in the Schengen Area towards the limit of 90 days in any 180-day period.
Travellers whose nationality requires a short-stay Schengen visa must hold the correct visa before entering Spain or travelling elsewhere in the Schengen Area.
